When the 17-year-old Milanese resident Francesca (Jacqueline Sassard) meets Sandro (Gabriele Ferzetti), a successful architect who is much older than her, on a streetcar, they quickly become close.  She dreams of a life of luxury with a maid and an apartment that she can furnish expensively according to her taste, and he seems able to provide her with this. However, she quickly becomes lonely. The film, which explores relationship themes such as equality, compromise and sacrifice, is told in flashbacks from the perspective of Francesca, who tells her story to a friend. (hjf)
